Kensuke is a recurring character in the Ganbare Goemon series. He is a villager who dresses as a beauty. He usually flirts with the heroes when first met and later reveals himself to actually be a man.
Appearances
The Legend of the Mystical Ninja
Kensuke is first encountered inside one of the many houses the player can visit in the town scene of Warlock Zone VI: Tengu Mountain. When met, he shows himself flattered for being visited by Goemon and Ebisumaru, although apparently he is also a bit shy and covers his face with the sleeve of his kimono.
Kensuke reappears in the final stage, Warlock Zone IX: Final Story, where it is revealed that he was kidnapped alongside other villagers by members of the Hannya Clan and thrown into the castle's dungeons to be forced to work for them. When the heroes meet him in his cell, he shows himself overjoyed for being rescued, and out of gratitude, he blows them a kiss, uncovering his face while doing so and finally revealing to actually be a man.
While Kensuke does still appear in his house in Warlock Zone VI in the international versions of The Legend of the Mystical Ninja, he was replaced by another character in what would be his cell in Warlock Zone IX, thus removing his gender reveal from the game and implying that the character met in Tengu Mountain was simply a girl with a crush on the heroes. The removal of Kensuke in the final stage was likely due to Nintendo's strict policies of the era against content that could be considered controversial for their consoles.
Goemon's Great Adventure
Kensuke reappears in this game, now living in the Tree Stump Village. In this game, it is revealed that he has an identical twin brother named Kenzo who lives in Lost'n Town. Like Kensuke, Kenzo also dresses as a beauty and flirts with the heroes.
